Abstract

Serum concentrations of revers T3, T3 and thyroxine (T4) were measured in patients with thyroid and non-thyroid diseases to evaluate the relative changes in T3 and reverse T3 concentrations.
In hyperthyroid and hypothyroid patients, serum reverse T3 concentrations changed in parallel direction with the increases and decreases in serum concentrations of T3, respectively.
In patients with non-thyroid diseases such as salmonellosis, typhoid fever and liver cirrhosis, serum reverse T3 levels were significantly elevated while serum T3 levels were found to be lowered. However, such a reciprocal change in serum reverse T3 and T3 levels was not found in acute hepatitis.
The administration of methimazole to hyperthyroid patients caused a more marked reduction in serum reverse T3 levels than in serum T4 and T3 levels.
The results are discussed in terms of alterations in thyroidal and peripheral production of T3 and reverse T3 from T4.
